Seminar on Optimization Applications in Disaster Management

Our Faculty hosted a scientific event as part of the activities for March 1–7 Earthquake Week. The seminar titled “Optimization Applications in Disaster Management” was held online, featuring Prof. Dr. Sibel Salman from Koç University as the guest speaker.

In the opening speech, our Dean, Prof. Dr. Handan Ucun Özel, emphasized the reality of earthquakes in Türkiye and highlighted the critical importance of efficient resource utilization and science-based decision-making mechanisms in disaster management.

In her presentation, Prof. Dr. Sibel Salman addressed disaster management as a continuous cycle, explaining how methods from industrial engineering and operations research are applied in the processes of risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery. She also shared concrete examples from projects carried out specifically in Istanbul, including:

  • Strengthening transportation networks
  • Location planning of emergency response centers
  • Casualty transportation strategies
  • Planning of field hospitals

Referring to the importance of decision support systems in making the most accurate decisions under uncertainty during disasters, Salman also answered questions from the participants.

At the end of the seminar, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Prof. Dr. Sibel Salman by the Dean, Prof. Dr. Handan Ucun Özel, in recognition of her valuable contributions.
